Roses and chocolate are great, but there are many more ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year. At Blackwing, we believe taking the time to be mindful is always worthwhile. Here are ten ways to slow down and reconnect with yourself and others on the day of love.

1. Prepare a New Recipe

Open a random page of a cookbook and prepare that recipe. Cooking is a fun way to slow down, reflect, or bond with others—plus, you get to enjoy a new dish.

2. Host a Listening Party

Purchase a new album and listen to it the entire way through. Or, invite friends to bring their favorite records and take turns playing them from beginning to end.

3. Write a Love Song

Do you play an instrument? Spend part of the day writing a love song for a real or imaginary lover. Bonus points for crafting your lyrics using a Blackwing pencil.

4. Dine Out (Without Your Phones)

If you don’t feel like cooking this year, grab a table at your favorite restaurant and leave your phones at home. Enjoy your food, enjoy the conversation, and don’t worry about your notifications. If you drove, leaving phones in the car works too.

5. Do Arts and Crafts

You could paint, draw, or make Valentine’s Day cards over a bottle of wine. Hang your creations on the refrigerator for the rest of February (or until spring).

6. Go Outside

Weather permitting, get some fresh air. A hike, a jog, or a walk in the park are great ways to slow down while moving your body. Consider striking up a conversation about the nature of love along the way.

7. Stargaze

When was the last time you spent an evening looking at the stars? It’s a beautiful and romantic way to appreciate our universe. Of course, February can be chilly in some parts, so bundle up and bring hot chocolate for added warmth.

8. Read a Book… Out Loud

Take turns reading a story or a collection of poems out loud with your partner or friend group. This is a relaxing way to stimulate the imagination—and perhaps more enjoyable around a fire. Flying solo? Reading aloud can still be an effective way to slow your mind and body. Savor every word.

9. Visit a Museum or Art Gallery

Take a trip to a local museum or art gallery and immerse yourselves in culture and history. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, keep an eye out for works that appear to explore the theme of love. Then, grab desserts afterward and discuss your favorite pieces.

10. Try Out the New Blackwing Essentials Gift Sets

Finally, purchase one of our new gift sets for someone special in your life—or for you! Featuring several of our most popular products, they’re an elegant way to experience of Blackwing.

Here’s to 2024! In celebration, we wanted to share a few fun predictions for lifestyle trends, popular activities, and cultural shifts that will be on an upward trajectory this year. In response to our rapidly changing digital landscapes, we believe that intentionality will be a key theme for society as a whole.

1. ANALOG OVER AUTOMATION

It feels like every single hour there’s a new “lifehack” or AI that promises to make our routines more efficient. Sometimes, trying to simplify ends up making things even more complicated. This year is about enjoying the process.

2. PHYSICAL MEDIA

Nothing can replace lending a book or passing down a record collection to a loved one. We’re making sure that these works of music, art, and literature don’t just fall into the digital abyss. Films, records, books, and magazines are physical time capsules that not only give us entertainment but preserve a particular time and place.

3. CURSIVE MAKES A COMEBACK

Cursive is back in the California school curriculum, reviving the handwritten script! Not only is it elegant and beautiful; every stroke is intentional and helps us really focus on what we’re putting on the page.

4. FUNCTIONALITY OVER FUNCTIONS

We’re bringing back things that do their core function really well and ditching things that do a thousand tasks really poorly. No more “smart” fridges that can read your text messages or microwaves that can start the car. It’s all about well-built devices and products that do that one thing reliably every time.

5. DINNER PARTIES

Themed dinners, potlucks, or pizza nights — it’s about spending quality time with friends and family through the vessel of a shared meal. Stories, laughs, and food around a table, that’s peak living.

6. AWAY FROM ALGORITHMS

Take back control of our taste and personality profiles. We’re leaning into the things that we want, need, and enjoy, not letting the algorithm determine that for us.

7. EMBRACING MISTAKES

Mistakes are just as important as the final product or goal. There’s something to be learned in every step of the journey. Mistakes don’t define us, but they’re all a crucial part of the stories we tell.

8. REUSING, UPCYCLING & VINTAGE

Thrifting and garage sales are a great way to find hidden treasures and also connect with the community around us. You’ll never know what you’ll find and that’s the beauty of it. Instead of opting for convenience or that brand-new thing, think about how we can repurpose what we already have.

9. CELEBRATE EVERYTHING

Trying is winning, there’s no such thing as failure. Every small step or accomplishment should be celebrated, we’re all on the same path to better ourselves and that deserves to be recognized.

10. STICKY NOTES > NOTES APP

Bust out the Post-Its! Let’s resist the inclination to immediately pick up our phones to jot something down. Science proves that we retain and remember more when we put it down on paper. Leave yourself daily reminders for tasks, things that inspire us, and words of encouragement the old-school way.

Why unplug? What began as an awareness campaign initiated by non-profit group Reboot about the mental health benefits of long-term smartphone use in 2009 has grown into a worldwide phenomenon known as the Global Day of Unplugging (formerly known as the National Day of Unplugging). This year, the Global Day of Unplugging will be observed March 3-4. We’ve rounded up suggestions for five ways to unplug below

1. Disconnect

The first step is to actually unplug! Commit to disengaging from all nonessential electronic devices for anywhere from a portion of your day to all of it, whatever is actually possible for you. Be realistic about what you can manage, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you can only commit to a small part of your day; it’s all part of building healthier habits around our attachment to devices, and starting somewhere is still a start.

2. Move Your Body

Take a fitness class, go for a bike ride, or take a long walk. Anything that gets you up and moving, out of your seat and away from screens, will be beneficial for your mental and physical health. Bonus points if it gets you out in nature! For those with physical limitations, try checking out a new shop, cafe, or museum–anything that’s accessible and gets you out of your usual environment for a new experience.

3. Clean & Declutter

For some, disconnecting from devices can cause restlessness energy. Not only does a deep clean keep your hands busy, but it can also refresh the energy in your space. You can start with a small corner, or dive into a deep clean of your entire home. If your home is already in tip-top shape, consider areas of clutter. Is your t-shirt collection getting out of control? Is your pantry overflowing with canned goods and condiments? This is a great opportunity to tackle clutter that you’ve been turning a blind eye towards, and donate to those in need with appropriate items. March heralds the arrival of spring, so this is a perfect chance to get started on spring cleaning.

4. Get Creative

Another way to keep your hands busy is by channeling your energy into a creative activity like drawing, journaling, or playing an instrument. Choose a medium that’s either comfortable for you, or inspires you to try something new. The goal here is to release energy, not to be perfect, so focus on the process instead of the outcome. Commit to 15 minutes to start, and you might just find that you want to keep going long after the timer runs out.

5. Give Back

In addition to donating extra goods from your home, you can find ways to give back with your time. Look for volunteer opportunities through local nonprofit events and organizations. Your hands will be too busy helping out to check your phone, and you might be surprised how much fun you have connecting to others in your community. Choosing a cause that is special to you will make the experience even more rewarding.

Take a trip with us to Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Tucked away in this brick landscape is the cozy Yoseka Stationery shop, where East meets West. “We started Yoseka Stationery as a way of introducing Asian stationery here in the U.S.” says Daisy, who co-owns Yoseka with her husband, Neil, whose parents started the first Yoseka in Taiwan in 1981.

“My favorite thing is being able to inspire our customers through these wonderful tools.”

One of the hallmarks of their shop is a long wooden table that runs through the center, and offers a space for customers to try Yoseka’s most popular notebooks, fountain pens, and pencils before buying them. “My favorite thing is being able to inspire our customers through these wonderful tools,” remarks Daisy about what drives her passion to sell stationery. In fact, customers leave everything from notes and doodles to full drawings in the tester notebooks left out for them. “It’s inspiring to see what people can make with nothing but something to write and draw with.”

Yoseka has been a Blackwing retailer since the very beginning of their U.S. journey in 2018, when they began as a series of pop-ups in Queens. They soon settled into their current location, a friendly corner of Brooklyn, in the Greenpoint neighborhood. If you are local to Brooklyn or visiting, there is also a wealth of places to visit in the surrounding blocks. Favorites of the Yoseka team include Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop for pizza, Ovenly for sweet and savory baked treats, Word for books, Rhythm Zero for coffee, Greenery Unlimited for indoor green spaces, and Transmitter Park for outdoor green spaces!

Visit Yoseka Stationery Tuesday through Sunday, from 1-7pm EST.

They are located at:
63 West Street
Brooklyn, NY
11222

Unable to make the trip? Check out their shop and blog at www.yosekastationery.com or find them on Instagram as @yoseka.stationery.

Introducing the Chuck Jones Creativity Pad, our first-ever landscape orientation notebook. Chuck Jones preferred a wide canvas for his sketches. The Creativity Pad is designed to give creative minds the largest unrestricted canvas possible.

The Blackwing Volume 7 Chuck Jones Creativity pad featuring a sketch of Wile E. Coyote by Chuck Jones

The A4 size gives ample space for creativity to roam while still remaining portable, and the blank paper gives free rein. Use it as a horizontal sketchbook, journal, or turn it 90 degrees and use it as a vertical top-down notebook. This landscape Creativity Pad allows you to have the freedom to explore new ways of putting pencil to paper. Here are some creative ways to get the most out of our new notebook.

Flipbook

Create your own very animations by drawing sequential images on each page. Illustrate gradually different and moving images in the same area of your creativity pad and flip through the pages to see your images come to life.

Storyboards

4 Scene Storyboard Idea for Film or Animation

Storyboarding is a key development step in animations, movies, and television. It depicts a story scene by scene, bringing the storyteller’s vision to paper. Start by drawing rectangles based on the desired aspect ratio, then fill them with scenes of a story you want to tell. This is a helpful tool for translating your scripts into detailed images.

Landscape drawing

Use the horizontally oriented canvas to draw your favorite scenery. For a bonus challenge, use an entire spread (both pages of an open book) for a striking extra-wide canvas. Encapsulate broad landscapes and large-scale drawings all on one page.

Web Design

Layout your webpage elements on paper

No matter if you’re a seasoned web designer or dreaming up your own first website, you can quickly explore different layouts by sketching webpages on paper. Sketch your desired homepage or webpage elements before you translate them to the web.

Character Design

Dream up a character and bring them to life by drawing your figure sketches and character designs in several different angles, poses, and emotions. Figure drawing and character turnarounds allow you to draw correct proportions and details that make your characters dynamic.

Architecture and furniture design

For architects and industrial designers, the large canvas allows for an impressive presentation and at the same time the ability to explore every detail. Sketch out your design ideas, lay out your measurements, and compile your building plans with ease.

Recipes

Sample Recipe with Ingredients and Illustrations

Curate your own recipe book by gathering your favorite food and drinks in one place. The blank paper gives the option to use fun layouts and also allows you to add photos and illustrations to your recipe book.

Scrapbook journaling

Add colors, textures, and images to your journal by including photos, tickets, and magazine clippings to create memorable collages. Our high-quality 100GSM paper works great with graphite, ink, watercolor, adhesive, or whatever mixed media you prefer.

Vertical Notetaking or Drawing

Creativity Pad used a top-down notepad

The landscape binding doesn’t mean you’re limited to using it that way! Our Creativity Pad can also be used as a large format top-hinged notepad. Try out a new and creative way to take notes, plan your day, or draw your next masterpiece.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. At Blackwing, we believe that taking time to slow down and unplug from our fast-paced digital lives is beneficial to not just your mental health but can also improve your overall well-being. Simple habits like setting aside 10 to 15 minutes a day to write can lead to long-term mental benefits. Here are 5 ways adding writing or journaling to your daily routine can positively impact your mental health:

1. Writing helps you reduce stress and manage anxiety.

Writing and journaling allow you to process your feelings and place your thoughts down on paper. Stress often comes in situations that feel out of your personal control and taking time to write about these stress indicators can help alleviate the anxiety associated with them. Research studies have found that spending 10 to 15 minutes a day writing can lead to a decrease in mental discomfort and provide a boost to your overall mental well-being.

2. Journaling encourages self-awareness and problem-solving.

Developing a journaling practice allows you to put your thoughts and feelings into words. If a certain problem or issue arises, writing about it can help identify what needs to be solved or improved in an intentional capacity. In addition, regular journaling can help you keep track of any changes or chart your improvement over time. Going back and rereading a previous journal entry can also help you gauge the progress that you’ve made.

3. It can lift your mood and promote overall wellness.

Creating a daily journaling routine is a healthy habit. Along with using it as an outlet for self-reflection, journaling can be a helpful tool for inspiration, motivation, and goal-setting.

4. Writing can help you express yourself.

Writing things down on paper may allow you to have new perspectives or observations about things that may be on your mind. Communicating with yourself through this process can help you understand your own thoughts better. Using words, metaphors, and imagery may also help you convey or pinpoint a certain emotion in different ways.

5. It opens up your creativity.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to creative writing. Exercising your creativity and exploring your imagination positively stimulates your brain. Working on a short story, poem, observation, or novel also provides a constructive outlet to process thoughts, ideals, beliefs and emotions.

Putting pencil to paper as a daily routine not only has the ability to help you get organized but can also provide a boost to your mental and emotional health. However, knowing how to start can sometimes be a challenge. Journaling is a deeply personal exercise and there are no wrong ways to go about it. The most important thing is being able to slow down, be with your thoughts, and create a healthy and sustainable habit that feels right for you. Here are some helpful tips to get you ready to begin your writing journey.

1. Take Time to Slow Down

In the midst of our fast-paced and increasingly digital lives, it often becomes difficult to take time to carve out time for ourselves. However, there are great physical, emotional, and mental benefits to setting aside time to slow down and be intentional. Whether it’s planning your morning, adding diversity to your schedule in the afternoon, or reflecting at the end of the day, the most important part of a journaling practice is the willingness to slow down.

2. Set the Mood and Frame Your Mind

After you’ve set aside some time, it could be additionally helpful to set the mood and surround yourself with things that bring you a sense of calm. Journaling is a deeply introspective and meditative exercise. Before placing pencil to paper, make yourself a coffee, put on some music or a vinyl record, and create a healthy space for yourself to be mindful.

3. Find What Inspires You

Inspiration is can be found everywhere and can also be a useful tool for motivation. Another helpful exercise in your writing journey is finding an impactful quote, lyric, or concept that inspires you on a particular day. Writing it down in your journal will help you internalize the message, be a springboard for reflection, and become something that you can revisit. Let that inspiration fuel your own creativity.

4. Dream Big, Start Small

There are countless unique ways to keep a journal, but one of the keys to a successful writing practice is consistency. As you begin your journey, it is important to think about the goals you’d like to accomplish and how journaling can help you achieve them. Establishing this framework can help you set realistic expectations as you go along. Having a general intention for your year will allow you to then create monthly, weekly, and daily steps to work in working towards the larger picture. Celebrating small victories is an important step in staying consistent and achieving your big dream.

5. Keep Your Journal Close

Lastly, make sure your journal or notebook is always easily accessible. Studies show that writing in a physical object is more effective for memory retention compared to in a digital device. In this day and age, we are rarely separated from our smart devices. Always having a notebook close by can help you develop a habit of prioritizing writing something down on paper before reaching for a device. Also, consider keeping a pocket notebook on your person daily to help you jot down quick notes or to-do lists while on the go.
